The 8N generator is a good rugged generator. If you can take it to a good shop ALONG with the regulator to be tested together as a pair. Over time the generator will need new parts but what doesn't. When I was doing moonlight work at the local auto store we tested them as a unit and made regulator adjustments when necessary. When you put it back together just make sure you flash the generator and battery lug for a second to polarize the generator. I agree with soundguy that anyone who told you that this generator is a nightmare shud not work on this stuff. In the last 40+ years I can't recall the number I have rebuilt.
