6v generator

How do you test the output of the generator and is it a constant charge or does it charge a little then stop.I have a volt meter i use to test car altenators which is a constant 13.9-14,just unsure about the generator,i have a feeling this is going to be my next project nightmare, any tips on getting it rebuilt by a shop,I heard horror stories about the 8n generator.I do not want to change it over to 12v i wanted to keep it authentic. Thanks this site has been helping me through every process!

I had one overhauled by a local shop and it works real good. It will throw a charge all the time and the regulator controls it. Check the fo-4 service manual for troubleshooting it.

if you've heard horror stories about N gennies.. stop listening to those people.. they are full of it.

ford 8n and naa and 00/01 gennies are very robust.

it uses a mechanical voltage regulator. it changes field current based on charge voltage ( and load ).

static.. a charged 6v bat should be around 6.3vdc

running at high idle, after a few minutes, voltage should be around 7.2 or so.

many consumer grade volt meters don't like the ignition and brush noise from a breaker contact system.. thus if your meter has a slow sample rate.. it may display eratic results if it is a digital anyway. analog are much less sensitive to the noise issue.

The 8N generator is a good rugged generator. If you can take it to a good shop ALONG with the regulator to be tested together as a pair. Over time the generator will need new parts but what doesn't. When I was doing moonlight work at the local auto store we tested them as a unit and made regulator adjustments when necessary. When you put it back together just make sure you flash the generator and battery lug for a second to polarize the generator. I agree with soundguy that anyone who told you that this generator is a nightmare shud not work on this stuff. In the last 40+ years I can't recall the number I have rebuilt.
