You will need to create a voltage divider so as to power the gauge/sending unit from 6V. This might be as simple as installing the correct value/wattage resistor in series with the fuel system. I know of no one that has done this.
Alternatively, you can change BOTH the OEM gauge AND the OEM sending unit, which is probably no longer functional, to the aftermarket 12V units.
