Ford 841 Fuel Gauge

What is required to make the original 6V Fuel Gauge compatible with a 12V conversion? I haven't reconnected it for fear of frying it on the higher voltage.

That gauge works just fine on either. Most gauges do not care if they are hooked to 6 or 12 volts due to the way they work

You will need to create a voltage divider so as to power the gauge/sending unit from 6V. This might be as simple as installing the correct value/wattage resistor in series with the fuel system. I know of no one that has done this.

Alternatively, you can change BOTH the OEM gauge AND the OEM sending unit, which is probably no longer functional, to the aftermarket 12V units.

Thanks for your replies. I found a 12-6V resistor advertised for this purpose. My concern for damage came from an experience with a neighbor's 8N which he described as "burnt to a crisp". Don't want to risk that.

You can do what we old 50's truck restorers do to save those original 6 volt gauges. Those 6 volt gauges will let the smoke out on 12 volts.

An 8N would not have that gauge plus any it would have would not be hurt by 12 volts. That said my 841 had a working fuel gauge when I got it and it was set up as 12 volts but do not know if it had been changed or what ever. A simple ballast resister like say an O'Reilly's VR-1 would do the trick if it was needed
