I've have an older HF 2000 lb winch. I use it with a movable pulley to pull a 4640 lb lawn roller on my trailer. The movable pulley doubles your pulling force to 4000 lb. Without a pulley, the winch is about worthless. I've pulled a ford 4x4 F150 on trailer with it, no problem. I use a 12v trolling battery to power winch. Don't know what the amp draw is, but it sucks a lot of power. Make sure you get a winch with rollers to keep cable in center of spool.
Personally, I don't see any advantage of putting it on the front of a tractor, unless you have a tree near by to pull yourself out with it. If you were trying to pull something with it, good luck. I think all you will accomplish is slidding your rear tires. Traction is traction and you don't have that much on an 8N, especially with the tire bars backwards. May have better luck attaching winch to the rear of tractor.
I would use a long chain to pull stuck things with. Attach chain to 3 pt drawbar and pull as high as possible to transfer weight from front wheels to rear wheels for more traction. Be careful you don't do a wheelie.
If my winch dies, I'll buy something stronger built. However, my winch beats a come-along.
