i call bull hockey! the shifter is a shaft with a ball in the middle and a shaft out the bottom, it fits in a round type socket and unless there is grease packed tight around the "ball" water will flow right into the transmission. the old 8n i had got water in it that way, i drained water out of it after it sat outside for about 3 months, i put a boot on the shifter and it sat outside always and got nothing in the trans after that....
