I have had pretty good luck with welding on cast iron, as long as the block is well heated it should work out ok. It can be stick welded, but I prefer a good heli-arc weld using a cast iron stick weld rod with the flux removed. I have also had good luck just brazing on cast iron. The key is getting the whole block nice and tostie to prevent the weld itself from cracking. Brazing is much easier, it doesn't tend to crack as easy as a weld. In both cases I would grind the crack to get a slight recess so the weld or bronze will be stronger, it will look better also since you can grind it so it will look a little smother. Even if you decide on JB weld or some other form of epoxy I would still grind a slight recess along the crack, and leave it as rough as possible so the JB will have something to grab on to. At least you have a 9N block, I have a mut 9N with an 8N engine.
