Hi Virginia, In a word, nothing! With the engine switched OFF and the PTO dis-engaged remove the 540 shaft by removing the 4 bolts as explained earlier. Now take something like a large nail or a thin bolt,and put it in one of the bolt holes in the outer ring. Now turn the disc using the bolt/nail as a crank handle. You will notice that for every turn of the outer ring, the inner ring will actually spin nearly 2 turns. The 1000 rpm shaft is designed to fit onto the inner ring, and thus automatically spins at the correct rpm. I seem to remember that both 540 and 1000 rpm PTO speeds are achieved at 2000 engine rpm.
