We have a Massey Ferguson 1000 with a rear pto 540 shaft. We want to change it to 1000 Does anybody have information on changing this? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all who replied. But by doing this will it let the cutter turn faster? What we have is a pto on the tractor that is 540 and the cutter is 1000 we would like to make it cut to its potential. The shop manuals goes into something deeper to do with the gears. But its not clear.

I understand that the cutter must be only going at around half its normal speed if it is designed for 1000 rpm PTO. I get the impression that the cutter's PTO shaft has 6 splines if it fits on the tractor 540 shaft? If you change the tractor shaft for 1000 rpm PTO, it will have 21 fine splines, instead of the 6 thicker splines it has now so you will need a 21 spline female end PTO shaft on your cutter.
Complicated aint it!
Roy.

We have done that but it still turns at 540. What we need to know is what you have to do in the tractor itself to make it turn at 1000.

Hi Virginia,
In a word, nothing! With the engine switched OFF and the PTO dis-engaged remove the 540 shaft by removing the 4 bolts as explained earlier. Now take something like a large nail or a thin bolt, and put it in one of the bolt holes in the outer ring. Now turn the disc using the bolt/nail as a crank handle. You will notice that for every turn of the outer ring, the inner ring will actually spin nearly 2 turns. The 1000 rpm shaft is designed to fit onto the inner ring, and thus automatically spins at the correct rpm. I seem to remember that both 540 and 1000 rpm PTO speeds are achieved at 2000 engine rpm.

I've been doing this for a friend and will relay this. Thanks for your input. It makes sense to me. You have a good day and thank you again!

Last week I had to purchase a new 1000 shaft for my 1105, then promptly found the old one, so I have a new one for sale. The price was about $135 Canadian, or about $100 US.

I am talking here about a UK version but I think it is the same for all 1100 tractors.
The shaft is held on by 4 bolts. You remove these to reveal a smaller disc which runs within the outer ring which holds the 540rpm/6 spline shaft. The 1000rpm/21 spline shaft then bolts onto this inner disc. There is no 'gear changing' to do.

Virginia, Do you have the fine spline 1000 rpm shaft. You just unbolt the 540 shaft and remove, then bolt on the 1000 shaft with 4 bolts. Regards, sibby.

Sibby,
We used to run a 100" Howard rotovator on our 1100, (We all know what those things are like too turn!) It never ceased to amaze me that those 4 iddy-biddy bolts could stand all that hammer! They never gave us any problems.

I think I have an unused engine for the 1100. It is an xb308. Can you help me determine if my engine is for an 1100? Any pics of the engine?

Roy, We had ours for 25 years, never had a problem with it. The fella that bought it new had a leaky top radiator tank, decided to remove it himself and get it soldered and shoved a piece of rag in the intake manifold, then assembled it and put hose back on. Started engine and it missed and he thought he cooked it or had blown a head gasket, he was planting his sugar cane crop and needed a tractor fast, so traded it in on a new 1105. I was serving my apprenticeship at the time and had the job of dismantling the engine, found the rag wedged tight in the manifold starving the engine for air. The boss said we may as well replace rings and bearings while were at it, told dad and we purchased a 4 year old 1100 with 800 genuine hours for $8750. Best investment ever, as it was as honest as the day is long. We only ever put an 80" Howard hoe on it @ 1000 rpm. It was a Western model, 18.4.x 38 tyres on the rear, and 7.50x18 on the front(it was a row crop model), all the others in the district were a lot wider and wouldnt fit in the cane rows as good. It did not have a diff lock, the others in the district did, anyway, cheers for now from down under, Roy, sibby.
