I think the hi low range selection is done by an electronic switch.. They're not unknown for playing up, iirc it's on the right hand side of the transmission, by the main gear selector, check the wiring on that...
As for the clutch, the reservoir is filled from the tranny housing by the pump, so should always be full, Like Sam says, probably the slave cylinder, if you can get to the hydraulic line, maybe take it off and see if the master cylinder is sending oil under pressure to the slave... I know to bleed the brakes that the return line from the reservoirs back to the tranny needs to be clamped off (vice grips)
