If it is the return line plugging it will smoke white smoke like crazy. It is a good place to start. If you take the fuel cap off you can see the fuel pouring back into the tank. It usually sounds better at low idle and as you rev it up you are using up all the extra fuel and it sounds good until your at the top using less fuel building up more back pressure. Does it have the new style glass fuel filter or the old ones. What does the smoke look like coming out of it? The metal line that goes over the tank can get bent/pinched off also.
