3010 diesel died

dad has a 3010 diesel that ran fine last weekend but this weekend when he started it said it didn't sound right, fed some hay then it died, he said giving it more throttle the worse it ran like it was starving for fuel. after reading earlier post about others tractors sounds like it could be the fuel return line. is #24 & #31 in the pic the return line?

sorry fellows don't know why the photo didn't load, but the fuel line goes from top of the fuel tank down into side of fuel pump.

That's Okay we know what you mean,, yes it is probably the coupler in the pump starting to come apart, remove the return line fitting out of the pump and then remove the check ball and spring, blow it clean and re-install it with out the ball and spring, it will be okay for a long time, but be ready to schedule a pump service in the future when you have time...The elbow in the return line behind the generator can also bridge shut too....

On 3010 you might also have to remove the studs in top of injectors as debris gathers there also. Start at rear you might only have to clear one.

(quoted from post at 09:06:26 12/22/13) dad has a 3010 diesel that ran fine last weekend but this weekend when he started it said it didn't sound right, fed some hay then it died, he said giving it more throttle the worse it ran like it was starving for fuel. after reading earlier post about others tractors sounds like it could be the fuel return line. is #24 & #31 in the pic the return line?

If it is the return line plugging it will smoke white smoke like crazy. It is a good place to start. If you take the fuel cap off you can see the fuel pouring back into the tank. It usually sounds better at low idle and as you rev it up you are using up all the extra fuel and it sounds good until your at the top using less fuel building up more back pressure. Does it have the new style glass fuel filter or the old ones. What does the smoke look like coming out of it? The metal line that goes over the tank can get bent/pinched off also.

it has old style filters, not sure about the color of smoke he never did say. he did take off the return line at the pump he said there was some small black pieces there, said he didn't see the ball or spring in there so maybe someone had taken it out already & is time for the rebuild?

Some times there is a fitting "in" the fitting that needs taken off,, the very first one out of the pump is the one the check valve is in...

he unhooked the return line and then it runs as mentioned, blowed out with air and can hear air going through the return line on the top, hook it all back up then it will not run?

If you take the pump out make sure there is a sping under the injection pump shaft. It that spring is not in the top of the oil pump make sure you get one. It makes the injection pump wear out faster with the spring missing.

Seen it before.

Just had the same problem on our 656 IH Hydro that also uses a Roosa-Master pump. Identical symptoms and it was the gov ring coming apart as stated. there is an updated ring available that is supposed to hold up to the newer fuels better. Just a heads up...

unhooked the return fuel line at the tank and blew air through from that side opened the line up and runs good again now, but the it will need to have the pump rebuild sometime, thanks for all the info and your help. you guys are great
