Ted, Back in the 50s my Dad bought a Forney welder and one of the things that came with it was a Carbon-Arc torch. I was helping him one day when he was bending a lot of steel. You know....the old "hold it right there" thing! LOL Altho I made it a point not to look at the arc, I woke up in the middle of the night with the old "sticks in the eye" feeling. I just applied coldpacks to my eyes for a few hours and it went away. Luckily, I did not suffer any lasting effects. I still have the "torch" and I was lucky enuf to pick up a whole box of carbon rods from an old movie projector which work really well but I don't use it too much anymore. So....as you say use caution; them's strong rays!! Clamping the two rods on both sides of a "frozen" nut will turn it cherry red and cause it to loosen right up.
