Jim, the late 4020's can be broken down into two groups- the '69-'70 models, and the '71-'72 models. An easy way to tell the difference from a distance is to look at the intake manifolds. The late manifold is straight- that is, the intake ports and runner are on an even plane. The earlier one is like the early 4020's in that the runner is below the ports. The '69-'70 models used a CB injection pump that was trouble, and many were switched back to a DB pump which all the rest of the 4020's had. The CB pump is noticeably shorter than the DB or JDB pump is. Their were differences in the electrical systems of these two groups. There is a prominent serial number break at 250,001 and up, which is the '71 model year. The later ones have a dimmer switch and an indicator light in the dash, along with single headlights instead of dual (unless more have been added. There are other differences, but these are the noticeable ones. I have a '71 4020, and love it. Hope this helps. Mike

Still another is the alternator. No doubt using the original generator keeps the tractor pure, but for thos
