Bearing "packing cord" or some such term. I used some on a F20 trany shaft few years back. Some Marine inboards prop shafts also use the packing cord wrapped around shafts, some are silicone grease packed, others graphite packed. Cord wrap is used to repair leaks because it can be wrapped around shafts and the cover plate put back on instead of a O ring that requires shaft to be pulled. Think of GM 2 piece rear main seals compared to the Ford O ring on 140/302 engines- GM doesn"t need flywheel, tranny, etc removed, just loosen bearing caps after dropping pan. Ford is quicker to do on assembly line in sequence, GM needs a couple more steps and a bit more time- but is field serviceable with lot less time. Packing cord designs can be serviced easier some times and during assemble if a leak is found at final inspection can be relatively quickly fixed on boat shafts- pull cover plate, add another wrap and squirt of grease or shot of pack swelling fluid- diesel or sometimes plain water, silicone grease follow up.
