The sledge hammer idea would work if the bend were such that one could hit down on the slat. The bend requires hitting the bar in the same plane as the chain and links. And I am worried about breaking links if they take all the hammer impact. I just got the broken chain reconnected and don"t want to go through that repair again. Which is why I thought taking the bars off was the better choice. That said, I have no experience in this kind of repair. Thanks for your advice.
