I have a similar mower, 917.270821 (hydrostatic drive). In looking at the schematic in my owners manual, it appears that the seat safety switch is the most likely culprit from the scenario you describe. The "pto" safety switch may also be bad, but I doubt it. This is a dual circuit switch, where both the normally open and normally closed functions are used. One circuit is used for starting and one is used for running. Test the switches no and nc fuctions, I'll bet that is it.
