You can try the Lucas "seal sealer". I forget the correct name, but if anything will work, Lucas products will. Replacing the seal is the right way to do to it, but it is a pain to do. I would look into getting some JD Corn Head grease form a JD dealer if you want to try this. It's a real heavy oil type grease thats reputed to work in cases like yours.
Consider this- if you trash the BGB, you're going to be out a lot more time and money than fixing the seal will cost you. Those suckers can get expensive to fix right.
