If the slant were reversed they would line up, but reversing the gear will not reverse the slant. Hold the pump in your hand and take note of which way the gear teeth slant. Then turn the entire pump around in your hand so the gear is reversed and you'll see what we mean. Just want to point this out to you before you go through the trouble of trying to remove and reverse the gear.
This is the same as trying to thread a nut onto a bolt. it doesn't matter which side of the nut you put towards the bolt, it will still spin on in the same direction.
