This is where decent multimeters come in real handy.... The fuel gauge is easy to test with the ohm function of the meter. Hold one lead on the base and the other on the spade or isolated terminal, then move the float through it's range. You should see it move fairly evenly from mabey 50 ohm at full to 250 ohm at the other end. If you get a range something like that it's fine.
Likewise with the light switch... I usually use the diote check/audible function on my meter... one lead on the supply terminal and the other on the load terminal... and switch it. Will beep if it works. Resistance should be '0' if it's good and 'OL' if it's not....
