At serial# 49095 (Oct 1958) in the 601 series the axle changed from 16 splines to 34 splines. Since the book list 601 and 2000 in the same parts listing you are seeing this but all 2000 had the fine axle.
The 801/4000 changed at serial# 48624 and uses a heavier 38 spline axle.
