My parts book says rear axle shaft part# is 312187. If replacing axle before ser# 49095 also replace the diff side gears. What is the difference between early and late axles? How can I make sure and find the right one? Also were 4000 4-cylinder axles heavier or more splines? Thanks

ditto what awhtx said.

At serial# 49095 (Oct 1958) in the 601 series the axle changed from 16 splines to 34 splines.
Since the book list 601 and 2000 in the same parts listing you are seeing this but all 2000 had the fine axle.

The 801/4000 changed at serial# 48624 and uses a heavier 38 spline axle.

Some time early in the X01 series production run Ford changed from coarse spline axles to fine spline. Your 2000 should have the fine spline axles. I'm confident that the 2000 and 4000 use different axles.
