Ford 2600 Diesel cold start procedure

My operator's manual states to turn the key one stop to the left to operate the thermostat element in the air intake manifold. This is what I have done with other diesels that have glow plugs. However, the key in my machine does not turn to the left. There is one stop to the right before the the guages come on and then another stop for the starter. Does my machine not have "heat- Starter"? If it does, how can I check it to see if it is working?
