If the model number is not readable, then you have to go off of the clues you have. 1. Four speed trans: only the 661 had live pto and all live pto Fords came with a 5 speed. You're right. The owner doesn't understand live pto. It will have live hydraulics (all Fords after the 8N have live hydraulics), but not live pto. Just because the owner doesn't know what he has doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad tractor. But if you're specifically looking for live pto, look at a different tractor. 2. Date codes: There may be some codes on various parts of the tractor that call out the date those parts were made. If all date codes are consistent you can usually depend on them to give you the age of the tractor. Check the archives for lots of discussions on date codes. 3. Paint: if the paint is original, a 601 series will have a red hood, red castings, gray grille, fenders and wheels. A 600 series will have red castings and gray sheetmetal. Is this a diesel? It is typical of an early 4 cylinder diesel Ford to have the model and serial numbers eaten away from leaking battery acid. The battery is located directly above the numbers on the diesel models. Good luck.
