I'm going to look at a tractor that is said to be a 641. But it is painted with gray hood but has 641 decals.

How can you tell between the 600s and 601s??

Also how can you tell the differences between the second number (601/641/661 or 600/640/660 etc.)

Thanks
Cub

Never depend on paint color or decals. They get changed too often.

Go to the link below and study that. It will show you where to look for the model number (640, 641, 661, etc) and serial number.

The 600 series was built from '55 to '57 and consisted of models 630, 640, 650, 660. The 601 series went from '58 to '62 and consisted of models 631, 641, 651, 661, 671, and 681.

Any way other that the serial number???

Seller claims he can only read the last number (1) of the series then the serial number is a 35xxx number. That would put it at 1958 if it IS a 601 series.

He claims it has live, which would make it a 661 right?.

But it only has a four speed. (I think maybe he does not know what "live" really means. I don't think "live" came with the four speed?

If you can not read the serial # do this..... .
If it is a 4 speed it has live hyd (all hundreds do) but DOES NOT have live PTO. (excluding sos) Live PTO only came with the 5 speed and then not all 5 speeds had live PTO.
Stand next to the tractor and look at the front of the rear axle housing (both sides). There will be a number cast into the axle shaft housing. It will be a letter then 3 numbers. This is the date code for when this part was made.
The letter is the month. A-Jan B-Feb C-Mar and so on.
The first 2 #'s is the day of the month.
The 3rd # is the last # of the year. Such as 8 is 1958.
You can tell the exact day this part was made and if it says B108 that would be Feb 10, 1958. This has to be a 601 since the 600 were only made to 1957.
While it is hard to see with the hood on the original radiator has a small square tag on the top with the month and year stamped in it. Such as 2/58.

You are most likely looking at a 641 from the info you gave.

If the model number is not readable, then you have to go off of the clues you have. 1. Four speed trans: only the 661 had live pto and all live pto Fords came with a 5 speed. You're right. The owner doesn't understand live pto. It will have live hydraulics (all Fords after the 8N have live hydraulics), but not live pto. Just because the owner doesn't know what he has doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad tractor. But if you're specifically looking for live pto, look at a different tractor.
2. Date codes: There may be some codes on various parts of the tractor that call out the date those parts were made. If all date codes are consistent you can usually depend on them to give you the age of the tractor. Check the archives for lots of discussions on date codes.
3. Paint: if the paint is original, a 601 series will have a red hood, red castings, gray grille, fenders and wheels. A 600 series will have red castings and gray sheetmetal.

Is this a diesel? It is typical of an early 4 cylinder diesel Ford to have the model and serial numbers eaten away from leaking battery acid. The battery is located directly above the numbers on the diesel models.

Good luck.
