An automotive oil filter is, I would think, a poor choice for a hydraulic filter. Hydraulic pumps are very sensitive to trash, even the smallest particles. An auto oil filter will not filter the smallest particles, down in the sub-micron range. The instructions that come with any of the more expensive hydrostatic mowers such as my Great Dane or a Scag, warn to not use auto oil filters. They are not trying to sell their expensive filters, they are trying to save your hydraulic system. If you insist on using an auto filter, at least use a good one, such as a Pure One. I'll throw brand new Frams away, they are not worth the metal they are made of. If you are interested go to http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html and read EVERYTHING. These web pages resulted in threats from lawyers, threats of lawsuits, bodily harm and all such things you cannot imagine, all because of a man's quest to find out which oil filter was the best made. Oh yes, the filters withstand the pressure because they are on the return side of the system. Newer hydraulic systems do have pressure filters, but the ones with the spin on filters are return filters. Charles
