I have run select-o-speed tractors for 35 years and we take the following action to repair input shafts when the splines have gone. Weld 2 dogs onto the shaft at 180 degrees to each other. The dogs should be about 3/8" wide x 1/2" long. Cut corresponding slots in the clutch shaft and re-assemble. Down-time for this repair is little more than half a day. Cost is minimal. If the repair goes again (we have not lost one yet) then weld it again. To avoid the torque-limiting clutch centre breaking, weld a strengthening disc about 1/8" thick onto the original centre BEFORE BREAKAGE. Welding before breakage keeps the lining true. Weld only about 1/2" at a time and then allow to cool to avoid distortion. We have never had a clutch centre breakage after having this mod from new.
