That's a good question... I doubt that timing or either has anything to do with it, small engine, heavy flywheel isn't going to have much kick back power.
You said it was acting up before it completely broke, what were the symptoms?
Are there any missing, worn teeth on the ring gear? Is the ring gear properly seated against the stop on the flywheel? Is it possible the starter drive came apart or failed to disengage? Probably hard to tell now that it took a hit when the housing broke.
You're not running a 6 volt starter on 12 volts are you?
The only other thing that comes to mind is something came loose from the clutch and wedged between the flywheel and the starter while it was running.
So long as it's working good now I think I'd just keep an ear on it and hope for the best.
