He has recommended using a 10w30 and 15w40 low detergent many times over the GL1 90 weight. Here are his words I pulled up.
The problem with GL1 type oil is it is thick in cold weather and thin in hot weather. Now we have Multi-grade oils you should use them. Multi-grade 15W/40 (low detergent type)is good all over the USA and Canada. You will find that it is kinder to your hydraulic system too. It is the same oil that you would use in your car engine (not Diesel) A multi-grade oil is better than a straight GL1 oil as it remains more or less the same viscosity over a bigger heat range than GL1 oil. Multi-grade oils have anti-wear properties that the GL1 type doesn't have, and this is better for transmissions and hydraulics that have to use the same oil.
