did i do wrong?

He has recommended using a 10w30 and 15w40 low detergent many times over the GL1 90 weight. Here are his words I pulled up.

The problem with GL1 type oil is it is thick in cold weather and thin in hot weather. Now we have Multi-grade oils you should use them. Multi-grade 15W/40 (low detergent type)is good all over the USA and Canada. You will find that it is kinder to your hydraulic system too.
It is the same oil that you would use in your car engine (not Diesel) A multi-grade oil is better than a straight GL1 oil as it remains more or less the same viscosity over a bigger heat range than GL1 oil. Multi-grade oils have anti-wear properties
that the GL1 type doesn't have, and this is better for transmissions and hydraulics that have to use the same oil. Hydraulics especially benefit from the Multi-grade [email protected]

Absolutely no harm done! The 10W30 will be better in the cold, and the detergent in a normal 10W30 oil is not strong enough to foam the oil under hydraulic pressure. If it was a 15W40 DIESEL oil, then it may be an issue with the oil foaming. Just some food for thought, most of the new Zero Turn mowers use a 20W-50 motor oil in the hydro transmissions- even though they are a bit of a different animal if they don't foam the oil, then the fergie will be fine.

You certainly did no harm, not at all.
I gave up window shopping for 'GL-1' around here long ago. NAPA told me I just bought the last 5 gallon pail of it in New England, and there was going to be no more. GL-4 will replace it.... guys on here had fits over the 4, John made some sense about the motor oil.. I was building a colorful collect of different brands of fluid pails, so about a year ago I started with the 10W40 thing..... and now I buy it in bulk if I can, it goes in the daily driver to the snowblower, both ends of all the tractors, cutting oil for the Bridgeport and lathe, and the used stuff starts the wood stove and barbeque. I want to find affordable 55 gallon drums if I can.
If dirt is the issue, we've just got to try to keep the insides as clean as possible, yes, including water. But condensation is ? 'un-avoidable'? in our climate... 2/3's of the tranny is above the full level...it's gunna swet in there...

I would go with a 80 -90 gear oil with the Lucas oil treatment. Or if I used a 10 W 30 motor oil I would use a lot of Lucas oil Treatment because !0 W 30 oil gets just like water when hot and it ( 10 W 30 )will not carry good on gears when hot and it will get hot if you do any kind of heavy work in hot wheather.

Tony, I have some affordable 55 gallon drums I can bring to the expo. Oh did you want oil in them? Sorry. LOL
