I would change the filter. It's just a paper cartridge style filter. If the filter housing comes out make sure you put it and the spring and stuff back in the right order or it will be pointless to have an oil filter, or the spring could be missing because sometimes people loose them and don't replace them. Make sure to check it out. Here is a pic of the assembly.
