For engines that are reluctant to start at low
temps, I would always make sure the choke is fully
closing, and that the rest of the ignition and fuel systems are up to snuff. New dist. cap, points, rotor, condensor, ign. wires, plugs, etc.
Drain the gas tank and replace the gas, if it is
old or stale, and use STABIL (or some fuel preservative) in the truck, if you only drive it
rarely. If compression is low, that will make cold winter starts tough. Using a block heater is
always a good idea, so keep doing that.

There is *no reason* a 6v and/or a conventional ignition (not HEI or electronic) cannot start and
run just fine at low temps. My Farmall A has started without protest many times at temps well below zero. 6v, points, etc. - no electronic anything.

Electronic ign. might help on-road performance (horsepower) slightly, but before you'd notice a big difference, you'd have to change a lot of the other design elements in that engine.
