The previous owner had disabled the unit on my M in years past. It wasn't until I got it working again that I found out why.

1. The pump shaft had a lot of end play and the seal was wore out causing fluid to leak out and blown back by the fan onto the motor. That was pretty messy.

2. The torque motor was not properly centered up with the front part of the steering shaft creating a knuckle, causing another leak, dribbling down on the valve cover. Another messy situation.

Here's how it looked after getting it working again.

You can see in this photo the front shaft not parallel with the torque motor causing the knuckle and leak.
