The stroke of 5th is less than the others, but the problem is probably one of three things. Input shaft splines and 4th 5th slider gear splines are worn and tapered from continual rough grinding into 5th from 4th. Worn or failed intermediate (pilot) bearing between input and output shafts (near the 4th 5th slider location) Ball and spring on detent weak or broken. All these repairs require removal of the trans top. The first two require a split of the tractor to get at the problem (IIRC). The tractor usually does not have this issue because the TA allows starting in 5th TA then going to direct. Jim Jim
