I recently had the head off of my SMTA. I ended up leaving most of the studs in the black because they just din't want to come out. I had one that striped the threads(on the top end luckyly) when I retorqued the bolts. Think you should clean the threads on the tops of the studs at least to get an accurate torque. Have heard both ways myself. When I used to work on JD tractors we usually changed the head bolts due to streach the first time around. Not much help I guess
