A 12 volt system is just reliable as a six, as long as the components are installed properly.
Just hanging an old alternator on a tractor with frayed wiring wont cut it. rewire the tractor. by now the original harness has reached the end of it's useful life. The extra amperage from the alternator will break down the old wire fast.
Also, the alternator has to be mounted properly, at the proper position to the v belt. forget the diode! Simply install a DPDT switch in place of the ignition switch, and provide an accessory terminal. That is the way GM did it, if one studies the schematic.
I have had my super c wired to 12 volts since 1991. I never had one single problem with the electrical system.
choosing the right components, wiring them properly is key. I cannot stress enough that new wire and tight connections is vital.
I also have appreciation for a unmolested 6 volt system. it looks good in show for a tractor to be all original.
To to infer that somehow a PROPERLY INSTALLED 12 volt system is not as reliable as a six volt is pure hogwash! the problems usually come about by not understanding wiring systems, poor connections and old wire.
