One sign would be the housing that serial plate is on. If the starter mounts with 3 bolts instead of 2, it at least the housing came from a diesel or is a replacement or from a latter tractor. If it has 3 bolts and you can manage to see a 4 digit # on top of housing followed by 2 letters its a diesel housing. If the fuel tank has 2 openings in the bottom with one pluged that may be another sign. No trouble to tell whats in there now. If the exhaust comes through hood on right side of tractor or the side brake pedals are on, its a diesel. If exhaust comes up on left side its a gas. Thats comparing M and MD engines. Your tractor serial # is a 47 model to me, a 48 model on some lists. If you have a gas M engine see if you can find a engine serial # stamped in block in a small flat area above ignition unit and below the front spark plug. If you post it with prefix letters if any that may tell what model the engine is.
