You cannot leave the cables on as they will get too hot, I have done this many times and what you do is hook up cables + to + and - to - and as soon as they are hooked up start the tractor, and as soon as it starts remove the cables as the will already be getting hot. Not the best way but if you don't have any other way it does work, the starter will roll over twice as fast as normal.
