Randy - In most cases you can indeed fix the starter yourself! They are way overdesigned and thus amazingly long-lived. The most common failure is worn/broken brushes and a dirty commutator. Any starter/alternator shop will have replacment brushes in stock (about $8 for a set) and they are not difficult to replace. The other (occasional) problem is copper strap conductors coming loose from the battery cable terminal inside the generator. However unless you have the proper (ie. large!) soldering equipment this repair is best left to a starter shop. ---- Worst case is a complete rebuild at a starter shop. Around here a full rebuild (including a fresh coat of Farmall red) is $100 - or $140 if a new bendix is included.
