Biggest reason people do that is because the engine get worn and will not start on 6 volts any more, plus alternators just plain stand up better and take less to keep them working right then a genny system does. But if its works well on 6 volts I would not change it, plus out there it never gets cold enough to have much problems with starting on 6 volts as long as you keep it tuned up and maintaned
