Those ballast resistor's were designed to drop that 12-14 volts to 6 or 7 after the engine started. They were used in water craft too. I've never had a coil with an internal resistor that I ever had a problem with. A defective resistor usually will allow the engine to start until you release the starter switch and then the engine dies. Bob M has a very good troubleshooting flow chart for most of these electrical problems. He may post on your problem later today. Hal
