From the "old farmer" perspective, the ideal tread setting is the one where it's set so you don't have to change it :) Technically speaking, the ideal tread setting is the one that's right for the job you're doing. I think there are basically two tread settings: 1. Plowing, so the plow cuts at the correct width, and so you're not fighting side draft. 2. Cultivating, so the tractor fits down between the rows. One or the other will work for 99.9% of your field work. If you can work it so they're both the same, all the better. Sometimes it doesn't matter, like when you're pulling the disc or a trailer.
