I would highly recommend using a Hitachi #14231 alternator which is smaller then a Delco 10SI. The NAPA part no. is 213-8130 and the application is for a 1978 thru 1980 (and maybe others) pickup with a 2 liter engine. I recently installed one on my H and have plently of clearence between the alternator, valve cover and the hood. Another trick that made this conversion really nice was by turning over the generator bracket and mounting the alternator on it with a long pivot bolt and some tube spacers and washers was being able to retain the existing generator belt for use with the alternator. I put a split lock washer which came with the alternator between the two alternator pulley halves and an external tooth lock washer under the nut on the alternator shaft. By turning the generator bracket upside down you raise the pulley centerline about 1 1/2" which took out the slack in the existing genertor belt while maintaining clearance between the valve cover and hood. Didn't have to play with the tractor pulleys or belts at all. Also, the gentleman referred to in one of the posts with the Hitachi alternator for sale is John Church (JWC1934@aol.com). Hope this is of some help to you.
