12 Volt Wanna b

I have decided to convert my H to a 12 volt system with a Delco alternator. I got the 10SI designation from a previous post on this board, so I hope it"s correct. My question: If I go to my local NAPA store & ask for a Delco 10SI alternator, will they know what to give me, or should I ask for an alternator to fit a certain year & model GM vehicle, & what should that year & model be? Thanks in advance.

I would highly recommend using a Hitachi #14231 alternator which is smaller then a Delco 10SI. The NAPA part no. is 213-8130 and the application is for a 1978 thru 1980 (and maybe others) pickup with a 2 liter engine. I recently installed one on my H and have plently of clearence between the alternator, valve cover and the hood. Another trick that made this conversion really nice was by turning over the generator bracket and mounting the alternator on it with a long pivot bolt and some tube spacers and washers was being able to retain the existing generator belt for use with the alternator. I put a split lock washer which came with the alternator between the two alternator pulley halves and an external tooth lock washer under the nut on the alternator shaft. By turning the generator bracket upside down you raise the pulley centerline about 1 1/2" which took out the slack in the existing genertor belt while maintaining clearance between the valve cover and hood. Didn't have to play with the tractor pulleys or belts at all. Also, the gentleman referred to in one of the posts with the Hitachi alternator for sale is John Church (JWC1934@aol.com). Hope this is of some help to you.

Does the hitachi alternator wire up the same as the Delco? I have a Super C using a Delco and now want to modify my H and would like to use hitachi to make it fit under the hood.
Send me an email if you want to chat off line.
Thanks
Robbie

Robbie, I used Bob Melville's wiring diagram here on this site for my H. It was very simple and I used my oirginal wiring harness (it had been recently replaced with a new OEM) by placement of the ballast resistor in a location suitable for the wire harness without cutting. In Bob's wire diagram which shows a 1 and 2 terminal the Hitachi's are labeled S (sense) and L (light). The L is same as the 1 and the S is the same as 2 in Bob's diagram. Send me an email at russell@wavecomputers.net as I have more info to share and would like to chat about your Super C.

Run a 10-GA wire from the starter switch or solenoid to one terminal of the ammeter. (FROM the point where the (+) battery cable is attached.)

Connect the 10-GA wire from the alternator's output terminal AND ALL electrical loads to the ammeter's other terminal.

If the ammeter reads backwards, swap the connections betwen the terminals.

For LOTS of reading on hot-rod wiring, check out the site linked below:

I put a GM alternator on my H several years ago. What I did for belt adjustment was to install an idler pulley on the bottom of the belt. It was really simple to do and it allows me to keep the alternator as tight to the valve cover as possible.

Chevy's from 1974 to about 1982 used the 10SI. Most other GM's did also.

Be aware that the pulley shaft is metric. I believe it is 17 mm. Be sure to take care of that item too. Try to find a pulley between 1.75 (is possible) and 2.00 inches.

There is a small amount of clearance on the H/SH/300 tractors, I've put them on all three. It won't leave a bulge in hood if done correctly. The biggest problem is that the alt. will not have hardly any adjustment. It will almost touch rocker cover and hood. Does make it slightly troublesome when changing belt, but no worse than most new cars/trucks.

The 213-4011 is NAPAs 2nd line alternator.
Their regular Rayloc line would only use the "13-4011".This would be a 3 wire unit.
For a 1-wire,that would be a different number.In Westling its 71-1127-1W12N.
There are clearance problems to be sure.Even if the unit is folded against the block/head it would still interfere with the hood.I will probably create a bulge in my hood to fit, whenever I get it mounted back on.

Please do not cut that hood!! Go with the jap alternator first. I have a 10 SI on my H. Is is laid up against the head and valve cover and hood. The hood sticks out about 1/16" more than it should, but I will not cut it. So many people do this. I am going to either go back the the gen when I restore this tractor or put on a jap alternator.

There was a fellow on here trying to sell a new 10si a while ago. He placed his ad a couple time without a response it sounded. Place a want ad or ask around here. I cannot remember his name, but he was from Illinois.

You may choose to go with a Jap alternator as it may fit better under the hood and give better belt adjustment.
