R. Smith: How much do you know on the history of this tractor? There is a shaft that can be installed in place of the TA unit. I have never seen one but it has come up here several times in discussions. I can't tell how to judge whether TA unit has been removed. All I have ever done to them is adjust linkage. On five TA equiped tractors totaling about 75,000 hours I only ever had one TA failure, and that was shipped off to dealer for repair. As such I have never seen the inside of one. There are lots of guys on here can tell you what to look for, and figure it out quite quickly.

However if one of those elimination shafts had been installed you should not be having the current problems, unless the main clutch has some problems with pilot bearing or clutch disc sticking on shaft.

Having said the above, if the TA shifting shaft is not connected to either TA lever or clutch shaft, it will have a fair bit of free travel even with the TA unit still in there. Is the TA shifting lever still connected to the TA shaft? If so did you try pulling back on TA lever when you push clutch pedal in as Jim suggested? That lever if adjusted will achive the same as if the short linkage between clutch shaft and TA shaft were connected. There is a chance all be it remote, that your TA may indeed still be functional. I think my first move would be get the linkage operational, then adjust as the manual describes. Someone in the past may have removed the linkage, thinking TA is trouble, and the best way to avoid trouble was unhook it. Just a shot in the dark.

Today's Featured Article - A City Guy's First Tractor - by Fred Hambrecht. After living in apartments in Atlanta for more years than I care to remember, the wife and I decided to move to the country. Humming "Green Acres is the place for me..." we purchased a 29 acre tract about 60 miles south of Atlanta. Next came the house, I could talk about that ordeal for another two weeks... But, I want to talk about my tractor! We didn't even own a lawnmower, and all of a sudden we had enough grass to feed all the starving children of the bovine world. Naturally, I talked ...
