The shaft comes out the front, I think it turns to the left as you face it, anyway whichever way it unscrews. The seal I was referring is in the rear hole that the shaft goes thru. The upper bolster is the whole upside down V shape casting that the lower bolster (with the wheels) bolts to at the bottom, and that the steering shaft goes thru at the top -- in other words the thing you are talking about. You can't the shaft out the back because the worm gear on the end of the shaft won't fit thru the hole in the rear of the bolster.
