When I converted our SM-TA to 12 volt I used a Delco altrenator with internal regulator like you did with the idler from an after market auto AC kit. I used the normal M generator belt. On the SM that I converted I went to a salvage yard and got a 12 volt generator and regulator. Used the original starter on both.
