I cut firewood with mine. We used to run a burr mill for grinding grain, a saw for splitting fence rails, and a Belsaw sawmill. I have seen one belt drive welder. The one belt I bought new is actually a round baler belt. Seeing how bad my old belts are and still working, width doesn't seem to be as critical as I thought it would be. For most things I think you will want to try to stay in the range of 6" to 7" wide.
