Dennis - As the others mention, all production alternators and about 99.9% of the aftermarket alternators are negative ground! Best way to tell what you've got is with a voltmeter. With the battery connected and the engine stopped, measure the voltage between the alternator "BAT" terminal and ground. (Put the red wire from the meter on "BAT"...) If the meter reads +12 volts or so, your system is negative ground. Conversely a reading of -12 volts means positive ground. Your non-functioning ammeter could be either a bad ammeter (needle's stuck) or the ammeter is wired up wrong. Hope this helps!
