all alternators started out as negative ground. now, 20 years later, several guys are making voltage regulators (internal) that are positive ground and some are even 6 volt. These are four the aftermarket guys (tractors and trucks) as all new stuff from the factory has been 12 volt negative ground since about 1965. You could have a 12 volt alternator with positive ground. DOes it appear the battery holds a charge? You need to put a volt meter on the battery and measure the voltage, then start taractor and see if you get a little more (13.8 volts). What eve you do, do not change the terminals of the battery untill you know if the alternator is + or _ ground.
